Opening a bank account in the UK

If you are staying in the UK for more than 6 months, you may wish to open a UK bank account. This means that you will be able to:

• Withdraw cash from an ATM (Automated Teller Machine)
• Transfer money to and from your home country
• Pay for goods on a debit/credit cards at shops

You will normally have to be a registered student before you can open a bank account so make sure you bring enough money to the UK for your journey and your first few days.

Banking rules vary from bank to bank and if you do wish to open a bank account in the UK we advise you to do some research with your bank before you arrive. Once you are in the UK we will help you open your account.

Some banks offer accounts based on Sharia principles and there are also a few specialist banks that operate in accordance with Sharia principles in London. If you want to open an account with The Bank of China, this is also possible in London.

Further information can be found on the BBA (British Bankers' Association) website.
